On Thursday, an American family sparked a bomb scare at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport after attempting to transport an unexploded bomb past a security checkpoint.
According to the Times of Israel, a member of the family picked up the unexploded bomb as a “souvenir” on their journey to the occupied Golan Heights. However, the airport authorities announced an emergency evacuation of the area when the family showed them the shell.
“When they arrived to check their luggage, they showed the piece of the shell to security,” the Airports Authority said. “Since it was a piece of a shell, the evacuation of the area was announced.”
In a now-viral video, hundreds of terrified travelers flee and scramble for shelter after an emergency warning is activated.

Why?

After being interviewed by security officers who confirmed the all-clear, the family was ultimately permitted to board their aircraft, without the unexploded bomb.
The site of wars that happened decades ago, the terrain is riddled with war artifacts, including land mines, barbed wire, and undetonated artillery shells.
