Arsenal defeats Crystal Palace to claim their first victory of the season

Arsenal started the 2022/2023 Premier League season with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Friday night.

The Gunners welcomed Oleksandr Zinchenko, William Saliba, and Gabriel Jesus to their squad, while Cheick Doucoure made his Premier League debut for the Eagles.

In the early minutes, Mikel Arteta’s charges slowly worked up the Palace defense, and Zinchenko came near to scoring after cutting inside from a ball by Martin Odegaard, but his effort was repelled by goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

On 20 minutes, Zinchenko glanced a Bukayo Saka cross back towards goal unguarded at the post, and Gabriel Martinelli finished with a header under Guaita.

Patrick Vieira’s men upped their game, but they only went close to troubling shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale towards the end of the first half, when Odsonne Edouard flashed a dangerous header in the area, but Ramsdale denied him.

Eberechi Eze connected with Wilfred Zaha in the area and struck a drive from an angle that pulled the best out of Ramsdale to give the hosts a strong start in the second half.

Arsenal was immersed in their own half, looking for chances on counter-attacks, and Saka came close to increasing their advantage from a quick free-kick 20 minutes before time but blasted his attempt high and wide at the near post.

With the game on the line, Arteta made a double substitution with Kierney replacing Zinchenko at left-back and Eddie Nketiah replacing Jesus up forward, both for fresh legs.

Arsenal appeared to be revitalized, as they finished the game two minutes later against the run of play, as a cross by Saka deflected off Marc Guehi and went past Guaita into his own net.

The Eagles pushed for a late consolation goal, but the Gunners held on to open their Premier League campaign with a victory.
