Fc Barcelona has added US international and former Ajax defender Sergino Dest to their catalogue of players for the 2020/2021 football season.
The Spanish la Liga giants reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of the 19 year old defender for a fee of 21 million euros plus a further 5 million in variables. The player will sign a contract for the next five seasons, through to the end of the 2024/25 season, with a buyout clause set at 400 million euros.
Barcelona went trophyless on the 2019/2020 season owing to the deterioration of their squad. The board decided that a squad overhaul was needed to get the team back in shape. The weak defence contributed immensely to the loss of key matches that aided to the relinquishing of the much coveted La Liga title to fierce rivals Real Madrid. The UEFA champions league was a disaster as Barca’s hopes were squashed brutally by Bayern Munich.
Fate didn’t deem it worthy to compensate the club with either the Copa del Rey or Spanish Super Cup leaving the blaugrana empty handed the whole season, a record which the club haven’t experienced in over 30 years.
Some summer changes from the club’s managers since the arrival of Ronald Koeman as head coach saw the likes of aging Suarez, Arturo Vidal and Ivan Rakitic leave the club.
The defence system had the mistake-prone Nelson Semendo whose defensive skills are at zero level evicted and transferred to Wolves FC.
The arrival of Sergino Dest looks promising enough to boost the defence, while awaiting Umtiti from injury to replace Lenglet. The addition of Arajuo to the squad and the search for a capable Left Back will definitely solidify Barcelona’s defence for the new season.

Sergino Dest will be officially presented as a Barca player on Friday 2 October, to be followed by a remote press conference.
