Chief of army staff Death: Strong Words from Atiku, Bukola Saraki, Shehu Sani, others

Prominent Nigerians have described the death of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Ibrahim Attahiru, which occurred on Friday, May 21, as a national tragedy.

A former Nigerian vice president, Atiku Abubakar, on Friday referred to Attahiru’s death as constituting a dark day for the entire nation.

He said said the tragedy sent a rude shock to Nigerians and all its allies across the world.

“It is a dark day for the nation. The loss of COAS Major Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru and others today sends a rude shock across Nigeria and our friends worldwide.”

Atiku commiserated with President Muhammadu Buhari as the Commander-in-Chief of the nation’s armed forces and the bereaved families of the deceased military officers.

“I sympathise with the Commander-in-Chief and our armed forces on this sad development. May the Attahiru family and other affected families be comforted, and their memories be a blessing.”

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has also described the death of Army Chief Ibrahim Attahiru and other military chiefs in a plane crash, as a difficult loss for the Armed Forces and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Tonight, as the nation mourns the passing of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, and the ten military personnel that were onboard the aircraft that crashed in Kaduna, I send my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to their families,” Bukola Saraki said.

“Undoubtedly, this is a difficult loss for the entire Armed Forces β€” especially at this time when we are confronted by insecurity on several fronts. It is my prayer that Almighty Allah (SWT) grants the families and the Armed Forces the strength that is needed at this time,” He added.

The former senator from Kaduna, Shehu Sani, has described what happened as a national tragedy.

“The death of the Chief of Army Staff Attahiru Ibrahim and others in a plane crash is a national tragedy. May their souls rest in peace. My deepest condolences to @HQNigerianArmy, their families, and the nation.”

Also, the minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, was saddened by the sudden demise of COAS alongside other military personnel.

“Saddened by the passing of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. General Ibrahim Attahiru and others. May their souls rest in perfect peace, may God console their families, friends, colleagues and all who mourn them,” Geoffrey Onyeama wrote.
