FG Files Nine New Charges Against Kanu’s Release

The Supreme Court has granted the Federal Government permission to file nine new grounds of appeal against Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

On Thursday, a five-member panel led by Justice John Okoro granted the leave while ruling on a motion filed by the Federal Government’s counsel, Mister Tijani Gadzali.

The Supreme Court also gave the Federal Government permission to incorporate these nine new reasons in its modified notice of appeal dated October 28, 2022.

Nnamdi Kanu’s attorney, Mike Ozekhome, informed the court during the resumed hearing of his motions to grant bail to his client and to transfer him to the Kuje Correctional Facility for proper medical care due to his deteriorating health while in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody.

Additionally, he prayed for the case to be heard expeditiously.

Speaking on the motion for Kanu’s release from DSS detention, the Federal Government’s attorney requested an adjournment to file a counter-affidavit, claiming that he had only recently taken over the case.

As it seems likely that hearing the motion, particularly that seeking the transfer of Nnamdi Kanu may likely delay the hearing of the main suit, the court advised Ozekhome to withdraw the pending motions and enable him to focus on the main appeal.

The court then scheduled a hearing on the ongoing motion and the main appeal for May 11.
