Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has urged police commissioners in charge of state commands to “swiftly” end all election-related investigations.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, also asked the police commissioners to transfer respective case files to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for prosecution.
According to Adejobi, the investigations cover all cases of violations of the 2022 Electoral Act during the presidential and National Assembly electioneering processes on February 25.
“In a bid to ensure all-inclusive election security management and accord Nigerians benefits/leverage of active participation, to achieve free, fair, and credible Gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly elections on 18th March, 2023, the IGP has tasked Strategic Police Managers to engage stakeholders in their respective jurisdictions through town hall meetings and other viable avenues,” the statement read.
The IGP was reported as asking well-meaning members of the public to work with police and other law enforcement agencies in charge of election security.
Baba stated that this is to ensure a smooth security architecture for all and sundry, notably electorates, accredited observers, INEC personnel, and materials, so that all individuals may exercise their right to vote without fear of molestation, harassment, or security threats.
