In spite of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s long-running legal dispute, it seems as if Depp’s career is about to take a turn for the better, according to reports.
This case is notable in that Heard’s claims have effectively derailed his career, given his most recent film, Minamata, was filmed in 2019 and just came out earlier this year.
Now, it seems that Johnny Depp has secured his first major live-action role since then, as King Louis XV in Maiwenn’s upcoming film, Jeanne Du Barry.
The film is based on the story of Jeanne Bécu, who was born in 1743 as the illegitimate daughter of a poor seamstress and rose to become Louis XV’s last official mistress. Jeanne du Barry alongside Johnny Depp as Louis XV. Louis Garrel, Pierre Richard, and Noemie Lvovsky will also star.”
While this may not seem like a potential blockbuster, Maiwenn is a well-known actress and filmmaker in Europe. Her films Polisse and Mon Roi were critical and popular successes in France, and a movie like this will certainly be shown at more film festivals than Depp’s recent works. We saw how he ended there in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
The trial recently revealed that Depp was close to signing on for a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film when Heard’s accusations ruined the project.
Meanwhile, Depp’s trial resumes this week, with Heard expected to testify before the week is up.
