Justice Sylvester Ngwuta passes on in his sleep

Sad day as Supreme Court Justice Sylvester Ngwuta dies few weeks to retirement .

The senior judge who was preparing for his retirement would have turned 70 years on March 30th, 2021. Sources at the apex court confirmed that Ngwuta died in the early morning of Sunday in his sleep at his official residence in Abuja at almost the age of seventy.

The Cable reports that Ahuraka Isah, spokesperson of the Supreme Court, said the justice who had been ill for some time.

According to him, Ngwuta’s illness took a turn for the worse and he was subsequently taken to the intensive care unit. He, however, said the deceased tested negative for COVID-19.

“He has been ill for a while. He was supposed to preside over a matter on Thursday but the illness became severe,” he said.

“He was moved to intensive care unit on Friday. They even conducted COVID-19 test on him but he tested negative. We were already preparing for his valedictory service slated for March 30.”

Ngwuta was among the judicial officers arrested and charged with corruption in 2016 following a raid on their residences by the Department of State Services (DSS).

However, was in May 2018 discharged and acquitted by a Federal High Court in Abuja. He subsequently returned to the bench of the Supreme Court.
