Geoff Makhubo, the mayor of Johannesburg, South Africa, has died of complications after contracting Covid-19, the city’s finance MMC, Jolidee Matongo said on Friday.
According to local media report, Makhubo has been hospitalized since July 3, after being diagnosed with the coronavirus.
The city acting executive mayor, Eunice Mgcina, on the city’s Twitter page, confirmed the news.
The tweet reads, “We had hoped that the executive mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as we face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods. Sadly, it was not to be.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughters, mother, and the rest of his family, friends, and comrades,” it added.
