On Victory Day, President Putin Says Russia Defending ‘Motherland’ In Ukraine

On Monday, President Putin, on Victory Day in Moscow’s Red Square, claimed Russian forces were protecting the “motherland” in Ukraine from an “absolutely unacceptable threat”. Putin said the conflict in Ukraine was i”important to do everything so that the horror of a global war does not happen again,” according to AFP.

Putin compared the Russian military activity in Ukraine to the Red Army’s battle against Nazi soldiers during WWII. He claimed the campaign in Ukraine was important to deter a possible aggressor.

As a gesture of respect, Putin held a minute of silence for the Russian soldiers who have lost their lives in Ukraine.

Rather of labelling the fighting in Ukraine a “war,” the Kremlin has referred to it as a “special military operation.”

After early attempts to take over Kyiv and other big cities in Ukraine’s north failed, the Kremlin has turned its attention to the industrial heartland of the east, known as the Donbas, where rebels backed by Moscow have been fighting Ukrainian government forces since 2014. This conflict started a few weeks after Russia took over the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine.

The Russian military has rearmed and resupplied the troops it pulled out of Kyiv and moved them to Donbas in what seems to be an attempt to surround and destroy the most capable and seasoned Ukrainian troops concentrated there.
