An Instagram influencer from Russia got herself in trouble after she uploaded a nude photo of her next to a 700-year-old sacred tree in Bali.
Authorities on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali said that Alina and Andrey Fazleev will be deported for staging a nudist photoshoot on a sacred tree.
The Russian influencer faces a hefty fine of £78,000 and possible jail time, if convicted under the country’s Information and Electronic Transactions Act (ITE).
In response, the influencer deleted the photo and apologized on social media, acknowledging that she had made a big mistake.
“I’m so embarrassed, I didn’t mean to offend you in any way, absolutely no knowledge of this place,” she wrote. “There are a lot of sacred places in Bali and not all of them have information signs about it, as in my case,” she said. “And, it is very important to treat these places and traditions with respect.”
The picture of her nude on a 700-year-old banyan tree at a temple in Tabanan district went viral on Instagram, enraging Balinese people.
Mountains, woods, and other natural features are revered in Balinese Hindu tradition as the gods’ dwellings.
“Both of them are proven to have carried out activities that endanger public order and do not respect the local norms,” Bali immigration chief Jamaruli Manihuruk told reporters Friday.
“So, they will be sanctioned with deportation.”
The couple would be barred from Indonesia for at least six months and will be required to participate in a purification ritual at the holy site, he said.
Governor Wayan Koster of Bali stated impolite visitors would no longer be tolerated.
Last year, about 200 individuals were deported from the island, some for breaking Covid-19 guidelines.
