Soldiers kill a man hunting for snails in Delta

The Ogulagha village in Delta State’s Burutu Local Government Area was thrown into chaos after soldiers shot and killed a man.

On Monday, June 27, 2022, military soldiers purportedly affiliated with the Forcados Terminal shot the 27-year-old twice while he was picking snails.

Following the event, irate youth in the community went on a rampage, damaging the company’s vehicles and property.

They also took over main community roads to demonstrate their rage and disgust with the soldiers.

ThankGod Iyaragba, the community youth president, revealed how the troops attacked the victim, saying the deceased was hunting snails with six other people when he was shot dead.

“Around 10 p.m. yesterday (Monday), six of the community boys went to the bush behind Forcadoes Terminal for snail picking, but were stopped by military men on their way back,” he said.

“One of the boys, Endurance, tried to run out of fear but was shot twice at close range.

“This infuriated youths in the community to go on the rampage, destroying company vehicles and property.”

While the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has yet to confirm the incident, Ozobo Austin, the Special Assistant to Delta State Governor on Political Matters, has declared that the killing is barbaric.

Austin condemned the soldiers’ behavior as unprofessional, noting that the incident might have sparked unrest in the state.
