The defeat dealt a blow to the Squirrels’ qualification hopes as they now need to avoid defeat against third-placed Sierra Leone when they face each other on Tuesday.

Earlier before Saturday’s outing in Porto-Novo, the Super Eagles confirmed their qualification for next year’s tournament in Cameroon after Sierra Leone played to a 0-0 draw with Lesotho.

It will be the 14th meeting between Nigeria and Benin at the international level, with the Super Eagles winning 11, while two of their previous encounters had ended in a draw.

With one match remaining in the qualifiers, Nigeria now has 11 points, followed by Benin Republic with 7 points.
