Thai Police Shoot and Kill a Gunman, After 15-Hour Standoff

After a 15-hour standoff, Thai police shot and killed the gunman, who had killed three people and injured three more.

The shooter opened fire in Phetchaburi, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Bangkok, around 3 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Wednesday, before police encircled a residence he was in.

The siege ended early Thursday when armed police rushed the building and killed the gunman, who has not been identified but was claimed by local media to be a 29-year-old former national park officer.

“We proceeded step by step, starting with negotiation, but he kept fighting back and shot others,” said Police Lieutenant General Thanawut Wutijarasthamrong.

“He ran into his room (on the second floor). If we did not have shields, my men would have been shot.”

At the scene, police discovered a Glock pistol and two magazines, but they believe the man had more firearms.

Thailand has a high percentage of gun ownership, and there have been a consistent number of violent occurrences in the last year, including one of the bloodiest attacks in recent history, the slaughter of 36 people, including 24 children, in northeastern Nong Bua Lam Phu province.
