Tinubu Hosts D’Tigress After Historic FIBA AfroBasket 2025 Victory

President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted a presidential reception at the new banquet hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja to honour Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their landmark victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

The event, held at exactly 5:05 pm, also saw the presence of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the Wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, who warmly welcomed the victorious D’Tigress squad and their coaching officials.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu at the ceremony, praised the team for their exceptional performance, hailing them as “worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.” He applauded their commitment, resilience, and the pride they have brought to the nation through their continued dominance in women’s basketball.

Among other high-profile attendees were the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Senate Committee Chairman on Youth and Sports Development, Garba Maidoki; and House Committee Chairman on Sports, Kabiru Amadou. The presence of key stakeholders in the sports sector highlighted the importance of the occasion.

D’Tigress recently clinched their fifth consecutive FIBA AfroBasket title, defeating Mali 78–64 in a thrilling final match held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Their victory cemented Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball, maintaining a winning streak that began in 2017.

Monday’s reception follows a similar event hosted last week for the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, who were celebrated after securing their tenth WAFCON title in Rabat, Morocco.
