YouTube is rolling out exciting new features that allow creators to have more control over the aesthetics of their Shorts thumbnails. This new feature allows creators to add text, emojis, and filters to their Shorts thumbnails directly from their iOS and Android devices, making it easier than ever to create eye-catching visuals that stand out across various parts of the platform.
For creators looking to make their Shorts more visually appealing, YouTube has introduced the ability to pick and edit thumbnail frames post-upload. To choose a thumbnail, simply tap the pencil icon in the top left corner of your Short, scrub through the video to find the perfect frame, and then enhance it with text, emojis, and filters using the corresponding icons. Once you’re happy with the result, tap the checkmark in the top right corner to save your changes.
Although Shorts thumbnails don’t appear in the Shorts feed, where most views typically come from, they do show up in other important areas like search results pages, hashtag pages, audio pivot pages, and on your channel page. This means that a well-designed thumbnail can significantly boost the discoverability of your Shorts, attracting more viewers and increasing engagement.
Previously, once a Short was uploaded, there was no way to change its thumbnail. Now, with this new feature, creators can revisit and refine their thumbnails after the video has gone live. This update reflects YouTube’s commitment to giving creators more flexibility and control over their content, helping them to better showcase their work and optimize it for searchability.
YouTube is not stopping here. The Shorts team is actively seeking feedback from creators on additional features they would like to see for Shorts thumbnails. By engaging with the community, YouTube aims to introduce even more tools in 2025 that will empower creators to enhance the visual appeal of their content even further.
