A newly discovered mini-moon, named 2024 PT5, has temporarily joined Earth’s orbit, marking an exciting moment for astronomers. The asteroid has been following Earth for years and has now been pulled in by our planet’s gravity. However, the mini-moon will only stay until November 2024, when it will resume its orbit around the Sun.
What is a Mini-Moon?
Mini-moons occur when small asteroids or natural objects from space are captured by Earth’s gravity instead of being pulled in by the Sun’s stronger force. These space objects are usually remnants of asteroids but can occasionally be man-made, such as space debris. Mini-moons are rare but not unheard of—previous examples include 2022 NX1, which first visited Earth in 1981 and returned in 2022.
2024 PT5: Recent Discovery and Future Path
The newly identified 2024 PT5 was first spotted in August 2024 by scientists working on the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), a project dedicated to detecting near-Earth objects that might pose a threat to the planet. While 2024 PT5 is not considered dangerous, its discovery was reported in the journal Research Notes of the AAS, in a paper titled “A Two-month Mini-Moon”.
Researchers predict that 2024 PT5 will remain in Earth’s orbit until November, when it will exit our orbit and continue its path around the Sun. It is expected to leave Earth’s vicinity completely by January 2025, but there’s a chance it may return in 2055.
A Rare Astronomical Event
While asteroids frequently pass near Earth, it is less common for them to be captured as mini-moons. Despite their temporary status, they provide scientists with a unique opportunity to study these small objects. The Arjuna belt, known for its small-sized objects, is thought to be the origin of 2024 PT5.
Mini-moons aren’t exclusive to Earth. Other planets, like Jupiter, frequently capture mini-moons due to their stronger gravitational forces. Some planets can even host quasi-moons, objects that follow similar orbits around the Sun and can attract mini-moons of their own.
