Erling Haaland once again made Premier League history on Wednesday after scoring twice in Manchester City’s 3-1 win against Leeds United.
Since club football resumed after the 2022 FIFA World Cup break, the Norwegian striker has continued where he left off, scoring three goals in two games.
The 22-year-old scored twice in the second half of City’s win against Leeds to raise his EPL goal total to 20 after scoring in the League Cup against Liverpool the previous week.
He became the fastest player in Premier League history to achieve the record after doing so in only 14 games of the season.
Haaland mentioned that his motivation to succeed even more with the Citizens was watching the World Cup from home after the victory against Leeds.
“I’ve been at home, a bit mad that I’ve not been at the World Cup,” Haaland said after the game, as per ESPN
“I recharged my batteries. Watching other people score to win games at the World Cup triggered, motivated and irritated me. I’m more hungry and more ready than ever.
“To be honest, I get really p****d [when he misses a chance]. That’s the truth.
“But when I miss, I want to score even more.
“That’s the funny thing – when I score one, it’s such a good feeling I want to score another goal, so it’s positive.”
The record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season is presently held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer with 34 goals. The former Borussia Dortmund player is on track to surpass it, and although he said he had a goal objective in mind, but refused to reveal it.
“I have a target but I cannot say it,” Haaland added. “I just said inside the dressing room that I could have scored five, but the most important thing is that we won.
“For me, as a striker, I have to score more.” I could have scored a couple more, but that’s life and I have to train more.”
