The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has acknowledged a terrorist attack on a petrol station close to its office in Gwoza, Borno State.
Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, confirmed the attack during a media briefing on Saturday afternoon at the National Collation Centre in Abuja.
Yakubu conveyed his condolences to the victims of the incident and wished them a speedy recovery.
He did, however, explain that there was no damage to the INEC facilities in the region.
“I want to report that the military has confirmed the attack on two facilities including a filling station near the INEC office, but no damage to INEC facilities and no casualties,” Yakubu added.
“Some people were injured and receiving treatment in the hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery. But there was no disruption on INEC facilities and no disruption of the process.”
The INEC chairman stated that thugs’ attention had switched away from vote boxes and toward the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) after confirming that certain ballot boxes had been lost to thugs who broke into polling units in various areas.
Yakubu had earlier on Saturday cited insecurity for the late delivery of voting materials and election staff at several polling units.
