Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to start Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) right away and continue it until 90 days before the 2023 general elections.
In his ruling, Justice Ekwo further instructed INEC to make sure that all eligible Nigerians receive voter registration cards in time for the next election.
According to him, it was the constitutional duty of the electoral umpire to make sure that Nigerian law was followed during the election.
Anajat Salmat and three other individuals filed a lawsuit against INEC, arguing that the electoral body cannot cease voter registration in defiance of the conditions established in the constitution.
They begged the court to instruct the electoral umpire to proceed in accordance with national law.
The CVR was ended by INEC in July following a one-month extension after the Federal High Court rejected a petition by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) that sought to extend the exercise through June 30, 2022.
