Uruguay football legend Luis Suarez has officially announced his retirement from international football at the age of 37. The iconic striker confirmed that he will hang up his boots following Uruguay’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Paraguay, scheduled to take place this Friday in Montevideo.
In an emotional press conference, Suarez stated, “Friday will be my last match for my country. It was not an easy decision to make, but I do it with the peace of mind that I will give my maximum until the very last game of my Uruguay career.”
Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of his generation, Suarez leaves behind a remarkable legacy in international football. He will retire as Uruguay’s all-time top scorer, having netted 69 goals in 142 appearances since making his debut for the national team against Colombia in February 2007.
Suarez has been a crucial part of Uruguay’s success over the years, representing his country in nine major international tournaments. His most notable achievement came in 2011 when he played a pivotal role in Uruguay’s Copa America victory. Scoring four goals during the tournament, including two in the semi-finals and one in the final, Suarez was named Player of the Tournament as Uruguay lifted the Copa America trophy for the 15th time, their first since 1995.
The Inter Miami forward last donned the Uruguay jersey during the 2024 Copa America, where he played in the third-place play-off against Canada. Suarez’s contribution in that match included a 92nd-minute equalizer and a successful penalty in the shootout, helping Uruguay secure a third-place finish. He was, however, absent from the matchday squad in Uruguay’s recent 1-1 draw against Guatemala in a friendly.
Throughout his illustrious international career, Suarez has been involved in many memorable moments, including his participation in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he scored three goals and helped Uruguay reach the semi-finals. However, his career has also been marked by controversy, such as the infamous handball incident against Ghana in the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals and the biting incident involving Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup, which led to a nine-game ban from international football.
Suarez’s decision to retire from international football marks the end of an era for Uruguayan football. As Uruguay’s all-time leading goal scorer, his contributions to the national team will be remembered for years to come. The upcoming match against Paraguay in Montevideo will be an emotional farewell for a player who has given his all for his country
