Valeria Marquez was just 23 and doing what she loved—streaming beauty content for her fans on TikTok.
But during a live session on Tuesday night, things took a tragic turn.
A man walked into her beauty salon in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, and opened fire.
Valeria died on the spot. Her death shocked her tens of thousands of followers and sent ripples across Mexico.
Authorities confirmed her identity Wednesday, saying she had an active presence online and shared lifestyle and beauty tips.
Some of her videos had hundreds of thousands of views. But no one expected this ending.
According to prosecutors, the attacker posed as someone delivering a gift before pulling the trigger.
So far, the motive is unclear. There’s no evidence linking the shooting to organized crime, officials say.
The region, however, is known for cartel activity—especially the dangerous Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Still, security officials haven’t found signs that criminal groups were involved in her killing.
Zapopan’s mayor, Juan Jose Frangie, said Valeria never reported threats or asked for protection.
He called the murder heartbreaking, adding, “It’s incredible that you’re making a video and then you’re murdered.”
In Mexico, violence against women is a grim reality. The UN reports that around 10 women or girls are killed every day.
Valeria’s death is being treated as a femicide—an all-too-common tragedy in a country struggling with gender-based violence.
