The Namibia government has recently implemented export restrictions on unprocessed lithium and other essential minerals, aiming to capitalize on the growing global demand for metals used in renewable energy technologies. Namibia is rich in resources such as lithium, dysprosium, terbium, cobalt, manganese, graphite, and rare earth minerals, all of which play crucial roles in energy storage, electric vehicle batteries, and wind turbines.
In an official statement, the Namibia government’s information ministry announced, “Cabinet approved the prohibition of the export of certain critical minerals such as unprocessed crushed lithium ore, cobalt, manganese, graphite, and rare earth minerals.” The ministry further clarified that only minimal quantities of these minerals would be permitted for export under the authorization of the mines minister.
Namibia, known for its uranium and gem-quality diamonds, has witnessed a surge of interest in its battery metals as the world increasingly shifts towards renewable energy sources. In a bid to reduce its reliance on China for essential minerals, the European Union (EU) and Namibia entered into an agreement last year to facilitate the supply of rare earth minerals.
Several Australian-listed companies, including Prospect Resources, Arcadia Minerals, and Askari Metals, are actively engaged in significant mining projects within Namibia. These projects involve the development of cobalt and rare earth deposits, as reported by the reputable news agency Reuters.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe, another prominent lithium producer in Africa, also implemented export restrictions on lithium ore in December. The country now permits only the shipment of concentrates and has expressed its desire for lithium miners to focus on producing battery-grade lithium locally. Furthermore, Zimbabwe has hinted at the possibility of imposing a tax on lithium concentrate exports in the future.
The measures taken by the Namibia government and Zimbabwe reflect their efforts to safeguard their valuable mineral resources, cater to the increasing global demand for metals in renewable energy technology, and establish self-sufficiency in the production of crucial components for the global green energy transition.
