American tennis legend Serena Williams was forced to retire in the first round after sustaining an apparent injury.
Williams was leading 3-1 against the world No 11 Aliaksandra Sasnovich when she turned her left ankle badly.

Despite having a medical timeout, and returning to court for a few further points, the 23-time Grand Slam champion was unable to continue.

The sight of Williams in pain and in tears was hard to watch as she left the court having worked so hard to get back to action.
“I’m so sad for Serena, she’s a great champion,” said Sasnovich on the court after her unexpected progression to the second round. “I just wish the best for her and the best recovery,” Sasnovich added.
