Tragedy struck the Nigerian media industry on Monday as Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor and producer with Arise Television, was killed in an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja.
The incident, which happened in the early hours, has thrown the station and colleagues into mourning. Police authorities say investigations have begun.
In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, Arise TV described the late journalist, popularly known as Sommie, as a “cherished member of the Arise family” and a “vibrant voice that engaged and connected with viewers.”
The station noted that Maduagwu, 29, was not only a broadcaster but also a trained lawyer who earned respect for her professionalism, energy, and supportive nature.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones. Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the statement read.
Arise TV also called on the Nigeria Police to ensure those behind the attack are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted.
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu’s rising career in journalism was cut short in its prime, leaving colleagues and viewers in shock and grief.
