The year 2020 has seen some positive occurrences in the world of music despite the effects of the global pandemic Coronavirus. Many notable musical acts defied all odds and rose to prominence leaving fans guessing who deserves to take home the Next Rated award trophy.
The musical industry saw some upcoming artistes like Alpha P, Bella Shmurda, Kaptain Kush, Dandizzy, Laycon and Omah Lay breaking through to gain nationwide recognition, with the latter two having the upper hand. The question now is “who really deserves the Next Rated Award?”.
So many online polls shows Olamilekan Moshood Agbeleshe known as Laycon as the fan’s favourite. The Big Brother Naija Lockdown edition winner hit stardom following his victorious emergence in the Naija most watched reality TV show. Laycon gathered a large number of fanbase who are currently tagged “Icons”, whose votes and support helped him defeat other opulent contestants like Ozo and Kiddwaya.
Laycon released his first EP in 2016 titled “Young, Black and Gifted” followed by another legendary EP “Who is Laycon” in 2019. His second EP hit 1 million streams during his stay in Bbnaija house, and he became the first housemate to reach 1 million followers and get verified on Instagram while still in the house. Laycon’s exploits in 2020 sets him up as a good candidate for the Next Rated Award.
Omah Lay captured the hearts of music lovers with his single “Bad influence” which appeared on the top of the trending list on Audiomack. The port harcourt born singer and songwriter rose to prominence overtaking Dr. Barz, Dandizzy and Ajebo hustlers who were port harcourt’s promising stars. His EP “Get Layd” obviously gathered more than 10 million streams on digital marketing platforms including Boomplay, YouTube and Audiomack. His style of music known as Afro-fusion distinguished him from other artistes.
Laycon and Omah Lay are undoubtedly the biggest new artistes to grace the music industry. But who really deserves the Next Rated Award between the two.
Judging from the impact made, Omah Lay is undoubtedly the better artiste, The Bad influence crooner worked his way to the top with his music. His distinguished style of music which made him unique gave him the required recognition unlike Laycon who promoted his musical career through the Big Brother Naija platform.
As the end of the year draws closer, the Headies Awards would soon unveil the list of nominees for various categories, with Omah Lay and Laycon certainly selected for the Next Rated Award category. Laycon might be walking home with the trophy because of the support from his loyal large fanbase, but Omah Lay truly deserves the trophy.
