The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the killing of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu, the priest in charge of St. Mary Catholic Church, Tachira, in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, who spoke in a telephone interview on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Police has ordered an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators behind the killing, which occurred under mysterious circumstances.
“The circumstances of his death show signs of struggle. The Kaduna State Police Commissioner has given an instant order to unravel those behind this devilish act,” Hassan stated.
Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan Reacts
The Catholic Archdiocese of Kafanchan, through its Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Jacob Shanet, also confirmed the tragic incident in a statement. Shanet revealed that the priest was kidnapped on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at about 9:15 p.m. from his residence. His body was discovered on Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025.
Shanet expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Father Sylvester as a dedicated servant of God who worked tirelessly to spread peace, love, and hope.
“His untimely and brutal loss has left us heartbroken and devastated. Fr. Sylvester was always available to his parishioners, and his death leaves an indelible void within our diocesan family,” the statement read.
The church urged the community to remain calm and not take the law into their hands, calling on all priests, religious leaders, and faithful to pray for the repose of his soul. Details of his funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Ongoing Police Investigation
While the exact motive behind the killing remains unknown, the Kaduna State Police Command has vowed to track down those responsible. DSP Mansir Hassan emphasized that officers are working around the clock to ensure justice is served.
