To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Sergio Aguero’s spectacular game-winning goal against Queens Park Rangers, Manchester City unveiled a monument of the striker.
In the match against QPR that took place a decade ago, the Argentine striker scored the most important goal in the history of the club with the final kick of the 2011/12 season.
Because of Aguero’s heroics, City won the league championship for the first time in 44 years, edging out their rivals at United on goal difference to take the trophy.
The statue of Aguero, which was created by award-winning sculptor Andy Scott joins that of other club legends Vincent Kompany and David Silva.
Aguero won five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and six League Cups while with Manchester City. The Chairman of Manchester City, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, stressed the significance of Aguero’s statue to the club.
He said, “Sergio Aguero’s contribution to Manchester City in a defining era for the Club cannot be overstated.
“He is without doubt one of the greatest players that has ever played the game.
“When our fans think of Sergio, they are immediately drawn to the iconic moment of 93:20 and the goal that secured the Club’s first league title in 44 years, but as his record of 260 goals for the Club demonstrates, his legacy and impact at Manchester City go far beyond that.
“It is only fitting that Sergio has been recognized with a statue of his own, in celebration and honour of his accomplishments in one of the most important chapters of Manchester City’s rich and long history.”
Aguero saw the statue for the first time on Friday morning after its transportation and installation outside the ground.
From Atletico Madrid, Aguero went on to become City’s all-time leading scorer, winning five Premier League crowns, six League cups, and one FA Cup in a trophy-laden decade.
The 33-year-old was just admitted into the Premier League Hall of Fame after retiring from sports due to a cardiac condition while playing for Barcelona.
“Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving,” Aguero told Manchester City’s official website.
In those 10 years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the Club become one of the most important in the world.
“I am very grateful to the club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special.”
On Sunday, May 22, 2022, Manchester City will attempt to win the Premier League in their last home match against Aston Villa.
